Süel x Sustainability

Today ‘sustainability’ and ‘sustainable fashion’ are buzzwords that everyone is obsessed with, thinking it is a new concept. For us sustainability is not a trend, not even a particularly new concept. From the start our focus was to reduce waste and create our garments as consciously as possible. This type of thinking came naturally to us so it was easily incorporated into our business model.
All yarn waste is reused in special projects, all materials are all sourced from trusted manufacturers in Europe, our colleagues have worked with us as a team for years, because our work environment is welcoming and cooperative, our communicated massage throughout all social media is the same, to educate and to encourage conscious and sustainable habits and thinking.
Are you curious about the ways we make our business more sustainable? Want to know how exactly we recycle our materials? What kind of materials are we using? Want to learn more about the projects we take part in? If any of these questions, or something similar, popped into your mind, read further and we’ll answer all these.

Trash or treasure
Even by knitting to shape or using zero-waste knitting techniques, over the years, unused bits and pieces with faulty threads or even minor stains, a small sweater detail, a border of a neckline, braids, leftover fringes and decorations are constantly accumulating. We do not throw these away, but collect them until we have enough to create a new recycled and unique collection as part of our Trash or treasure fairs.
This minimizes the amount of waste material and gives you the opportunity to purchase one of a kind Süel pieces. We held the first Eco fair in 2015 that along the line was renamed and transformed into our current Trash or treasure fair, the most current was organized in 2022.
The life of yarns
No factory uses up all the materials, there is always a little left over here, then another little there, until it accumulates, which creates the need for a creative way to get rid of it. Though unusable in the production of knit garments, these little pieces still have value, and with a little networking and some collaborations, even these seemingly useless bits can get a new life.
Our collaborations include so far:
• Working together with jewelry designers, fantastic accessories are made from the remaining threads.
• Handicraft kindergartens and primary schools receive the remainder, the condition of which is participation in a yoga class centered around waste management.
• Since 2020, based on application, we have been sending the remaining yarns and scraps of material to the kindergartens to use up creating art.
• Flowers and other decorations were also crocheted for us from waste materials, which we reuse at our trash or treasure fairs.

Second-hand fair
Come and pass on your cherished but never or rarely-worn Süel pieces! Don’t throw them away, bring it to the fair so someone might buy it and continue to wear the pre-loved pieces with pride. Don’t have any Süel garments yet? Do you feel the brand was out of budget or not your usual taste? At the fair you get to know our regular customers, their favorite pieces and get your new Süel favorite from them at a favorable price. Plus, they have plenty of tips and tricks on styling as well.
At Süel’s annual fair, we invite you to consciously update your wardrobe and to be part of a community!

Süel - Sustainable fashion

In the fashion industry, recycling is a huge problem caused by the use of mixed materials and by the hardship of separating synthetic and natural fibers when they are used in one garment. Furthermore, the environmental effects accompanying the dyeing of raw materials also pose a challenge. Production waste and consumer waste resulting from low-quality garments are both harmful to the environment. What we can do as a brand is to introduce and use new, sustainable materials in our vivid Süel designs that you can enjoy for a long time.

Our materials and yarns:
We choose our materials in consideration of sustainable fashion, but we believe it to be important also to take into account the consumer’s needs and expectations such as durability, usability, versatility, easy wash and care instructions, extravagant colors and styles. Our 100% cotton materials are mono composite materials. Since the garments are knit to form, there is no tailoring waste and we assemble the garments with yarn of the same material composition as the knit pattern pieces which means that recycling can start right after cutting out the label.

We also offer 100% wool garments, for which the materials are sourced from certified farms. It is soft, does not sting, does not shrink easily, elastic yet still a 100% merino, which is also assembled with its own material. We only use “mulesing-free” wool, our suppliers ensure that the animals are kept and sheared gently and do not use the above-mentioned mulesing procedure.

As we mentioned earlier, we knit the pattern pieces to form, which requires a whole separate programming technique. The finished pattern pieces are assembled right after being knit, without having to cut them to form, as a result we produce much less yarn waste. In 2022, we also presented our zero waste, wholeknit pieces.
We do not use leather or real fur.

Our summer knits are completely vegan products, combining cotton, linen, silk and viscose. Look for the 100% cotton labels if you are searching for something  completely vegan and natural.  As well as all our other products, the threads and yarns we assemble these products with are of the same material composition as the pattern pieces, making them mono composite. After cutting out the label, they are ready to recycle.

Taking care of knitwear, what you can do at home for sustainability:
The biggest change in the fashion industry’s sustainability would result from a change in the operations of different brands and clothing suppliers. However, if you want to do something at home to be more sustainable, here are a few tricks. The best thing to do is to be informed and conscious about your purchases and properly care for the pieces you already own, so that they last you a long time. Proper washing and storage are essential, but doing minor repairs are equally as important.

Washing
One of the most important things in taking care of your knitwear is washing it properly. All Süel knitwear are machine washable. When it comes to our woolen pieces, it is important to only use a wool program. This is necessary because this program is more gentle and maintains a constant temperature, so the garment won’t shrink. If it is NOT a wool knit, feel free to put it on a 30°C  program with a spin cycle of 800.

Drying
It is important to dry the products horizontally. This prevents stretching or losing its shape. Only light, sleeveless pieces can be dried on a hanger, otherwise, the dress might weigh down its shoulders and stretch them out while drying. Never put it on a radiator, because it will become felted!
Similar principles should be followed for storage. Avoid hangers, instead store heavier knitted clothes on shelves, carefully folded!
It is recommended to use your preferred form of moth repellent, especially when storing woolen knitwear.

If a small error occurs, feel free to contact us regarding repairs!
